Scoliosis Pain Management

What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where a person's spine curves to the side. The curve can be subtle or dramatic, and varies with each patient. A patient with a spine that curves at more than 10 degrees is considered to have scoliosis.

What Causes Scoliosis?

Doctors usually cannot find a cause for scoliosis in over 80 percent of cases. There are two types of scoliosis that can be caused by various conditions. Scoliosis with a cause can be structural or nonstructural scoliosis.

Causes of structural scoliosis include tumors, cerebral palsy, genetic conditions such as Down syndrome or Marfan syndrome, infections, birth defects, and muscular dystrophy.

What Are the Symptoms of Scoliosis?

Symptoms of scoliosis vary from person to person. Adults and kids display different symptoms as well. Some symptoms that kids with scoliosis show are pushed out ribs, one shoulder being higher than the other, different parts or the back raising to different heights when the child bends forward, the head not being centered with the body, and hips that are uneven.

Adults with scoliosis may feel tired, have uneven hips or shoulders, bone spurs, a bump showing in the lower part of the back, not being able to stand straight, pain, weakness, or numbness in legs, and trouble walking.

How Do We Treat Scoliosis?

We treat scoliosis with chiropractic care, such as chiropractic manipulation, massage therapy, spinal decompression, and physical therapy. With chiropractic manipulation, one of our chiropractors can realign the spine and the neck, taking off pressure from muscles, ligaments, and other soft tissues, bringing pain relief to these areas. Neck and back pain can be reduced with this type of chiropractic care.

With massage therapy, the therapist will use long, circular strokes all over the body to bring pain relief to muscles, relax the body, and release endorphins inside the body. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine, which can help relieve back pain from scoliosis. Physical therapy can be used to keep the body flexible and mobile during treatment.
