Headaches after a Car Accident

Whiplash is a common injury after an auto accident. Whiplash happens when the head is violently thrust back and forth. Whiplash, however, is an affliction of the neck and not the head. It causes injury to the cervical spine, including tendons, muscles, nerves and discs in the neck. People who suffer from whiplash may have a stiff neck and limited or no head mobility because of pain in the neck region. One of the symptoms of whiplash can be a headache, but a headache after a car accident doesn’t always mean someone has whiplash. Other signs of whiplash may include pain, numbness, or tingling in any extremities, irritability, depression, difficulty with balance, and difficulty sleeping.

Headaches or whiplash after a car accident may not be present immediately after the accident. Sometimes it takes up to a day or two for a post-accident headache to arise. Emergency medical treatment should be sought for any severe injuries. Headaches in general are not uncommon. There are two classifications of headaches: primary and secondary. Primary headaches are those that are more basic, general headaches. Secondary headaches are the more serious type of headache. Headaches after an auto accident are classified as secondary. This means that if you experience a headache after an auto accident, you should seek medical treatment, either from a medical doctor or a chiropractor.

Chiropractic Treatment for Headaches

Many people seek chiropractic treatment for headaches. Chiropractors perform spinal adjustments to relieve any pressure that may be placed on the nerves sending pain messages to the brain. The release of pressure may alleviate the headache. This can also improve range of motion in the neck region. Chiropractors frequently apply therapeutic massage techniques to inflamed or compressed areas. This further reduces inflammation and increases blood flow to affected areas. It is suspected that some pain-relieving hormones may also be released into the blood stream after spinal manipulation.
