Hip Pain Treatment FAQs

Hip pain can make daily activities difficult and, sometimes, intolerable. Our team at Houma-Thibodaux Spine & Rehabilitation has gathered a few questions that we run into regarding hip pain.

What causes hip pain?

Many things can cause pain in the hip area, including the following:

  • Injuries: Injuries to the hip joint, bone, or muscles and tendons can cause pain. Even after healing, you might experience arthritis pain in the area.
  • Underlying conditions: Spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, disc herniation, bursitis, hip dysplasia, infections, and tumors can trigger pain in the hip.
  • Fractures: You might have a fracture that you are unaware of that is causing your hip pain.
  • Arthritis: Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are both common causes of hip pain. While these typically occur in older adults, some younger people with previous injuries or other conditions might experience these forms of arthritis.

Do hip problems cause pain in other areas?

In addition to pain in the actual hip, you might feel pain in your groin, buttocks, or thigh. Because it spreads into other areas, it might be difficult to detect that it is actually coming from your hip. If you notice pain or discomfort in any of these areas, visit one of our chiropractors right away. We will determine where the pain is coming from and address the correct area for treatment.

Do I need surgery to relieve my hip pain?

Hip pain doesn’t mean you have to jump straight to surgery. There are other effective solutions. In many cases, physical therapy, exercise, lifestyle changes, and chiropractic care can relieve or reduce hip pain.

How can a chiropractor help with hip pain?

Our chiropractors begin by performing a full evaluation to determine the cause of your hip pain. After gaining a better understanding, the chiropractor will create a customized treatment plan. This treatment plan may include a combination of the following:

  • Spinal decompression therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Spinal alignments
  • Cryotherapy
  • Heat therapy
  • Exercise
