Neck Pain & Neck Stretches

Do you ever wonder if popping your neck really helps to alleviate pain? We at Houma-Thibodaux Spine & Rehabilitation in Houma, LA want to give you tips and techniques for stretching your neck that will make you feel better and more mobile.

Neck Stretches

Forward and Backward Tilt

If you have neck pain in the very front or very back of your neck, this stretch can be especially helpful.

Start with your head in a normal, forward-facing position squarely upon your shoulders. Tilt your head straight down and straight back slowly several times, holding each position for approximately 30 seconds.

Side Tilt

This stretch is great for neck pain on either side of the neck. If the right side of your neck hurts, focus on tilting to the left.

With your eyes facing straight, tilt your head to reach your shoulder. Do not force your ear to touch your shoulder, but simply stop when you feel a stretch. Hold for 30 seconds, and repeat on the other side. Do this up to 10 times.

Side Rotation

This stretch simply involves turning your head to face one direction or another. Do this slowly, especially if you have tight muscles or a stiff neck.

Turn your head slowly as if you are shaking your head "no." Hold each side for up to 30 seconds, and repeat as needed.

Neck Pain

While these stretches are great for relieving neck pain, they are not a substitute for medical and chiropractic care. If neck stretches cause additional pain or the pain is persistent and causes immobility, it is important to contact a medical professional. Stretching is not a way to avoid seeing a physical therapist or chiropractor.
