Sleeping Positions to Support Your Back

Back pain is one of the most common kinds of pain. In fact, about 80% of people will suffer from back pain during their lifetime. Many things can cause back pain. If you notice you are waking up in the morning with back pain, it is usually either your mattress or your sleeping position. Mattresses that are older than nine years should be switched out for a new one. If the pain doesn't go away, then it is time to look at your sleeping positions and find one to support your back. At Houma-Thibodaux Spine & Rehabilitation we are dedicated to helping our patients live lives that are free of back pain.

On Your Back

Sleeping on your back is the best position for keeping your spine in alignment and to provide back support. It is not always popular since you are more likely to snore if you are on your back. However, getting a restful nights' sleep and waking pain-free makes the snoring seem like a non-issue. Choose a pillow that allows your neck to maintain proper alignment with your spine. Placing a pillow beneath your knees also helps to support your back and keep everything straight. Don't choose too large of a pillow. The goal of this position is to maintain the natural curve of your spine.

On Your Side

Side sleeping is the most popular sleep position and one of the most comfortable. Unfortunately, it puts the spine out of alignment and can lead to back pain. If this is your favored sleep position there are things you can do. Choose the side you want to sleep on and place a firm pillow between your knees. This helps to put things back into alignment. Again, the choice of pillow for your head is important to keep the neck level with the spine. Avoid sleeping on your stomach if at all possible. At the end of the day, restful sleep is important. You may need to see a chiropractor to keep your back happy.
