At Houma-Thibodaux Spine &  Rehabilitation we see people who have migraines nearly every day. Every year, about 30 million people in the United States have one or more migraines. But migraines take on so many forms that you may suffer from the condition without realizing it.

Migraines Take Many Forms

There are two major types of migraines.

  • Common migraines are also known as migraine without aura. When you get a common migraine, your head hurts. The pain starts on one side of the head over the ears and behind the eyes, but it can spread all over your head and neck. As the pain builds for several hours, there usually is nausea and/or vomiting and some degree of confusion. Your vision may be blurred, and you prefer to stay in the dark. Common migraine without aura usually lasts four to 72 hours.

  • Migraine with aura includes all the symptoms listed above plus one more feature. During the prodrome, the events in your brain leading up to migraine pain, you may experience visual distortions, or even temporarily lose your vision. Some people see crescents or stars or something like the test pattern that used to run on TV at night. The aura precedes other symptoms for an hour or so.

There are also less common forms of migraine. Some people get all the symptoms of migraine except for the headache. Basilar migraine can cause slurred speech that may make you worry that you have had a stroke. Sometimes migraine can temporarily give you a "lazy eye." Migraines cause intense abdominal pain without headache, and a particularly severe kind of migraine known as a hemiplegic migraine can cause temporary paralysis of one side of the body.
